Here at Smart Garage Solutions we are passionate about helping ensure the long term future and success of the automotive industry.
We believe that in an evolving digital economy, the skills and capability of technicians is going to be vital to its continued success and that apprenticeships should be high on the agenda across the entire industry.
Research has shown, however, that FE Colleges on the whole struggle to engage with the trade and inherently the trade on the whole are not great at engaging with fully skilled individuals let alone apprentices!
We are therefore delighted to be throwing our full support behind a campaign launched by our good friends at Autotech Recruit to educate the automotive aftermarket industry about the need to improve engagement with the next generation before it’s too late!
Autotech Recruit is hosting a Motor Trade Open Evening in conjunction with Coventry City College during National Apprenticeship Week on Wednesday 15th March 2017 (6.30pm – 9.00pm in the main college campus) to showcase the apprentice and training facilities that are available and explain how easy it is to secure a good quality apprentice.
The event will also feature presentations to help garages maximise their business potential and make sure their workshop is future proofed. Our Director, Ben Smith, will be one of the key note speakers on the evening alongside a number of other leading authoritative figures in the industry.
Gavin White, Managing Director at Autotech Recruit said: “As we are all aware, there is a worryingly low amount of skilled vehicle technicians, body repair technicians and MOT testers currently available in the market place and the road ahead is looking increasingly tough.
“As an industry there are many reasons for this, internally and externally, but with an ageing work force and other industries attracting a larger amount of school, college and university leavers, the aftermarket of the automotive sector needs to start taking apprenticeships seriously.
“We are putting our money where our mouth is and embarking on a mission to knock some of these barriers down and to increase the amount of young people coming into this great industry.”
The full list of speakers and topics on the evening include:
Mark Armitage, IMI, Senior Apprenticeship Manager – Apprenticeship Levy and How It Works
Ben Smith, Smart Garage Solutions, Managing Director – How to Improve Customer Retention, Referrals and Conversions
Mike Smallbone, IAAF, Membership Development Manager – Aftermarket Threats and What the Future Holds
Tim Howes, NGK Spark Plugs, Deputy General Manager – The Challenges of the Downsized Engine
Lucy Burnford, AA Good Garage Guide, Director – Getting the Recognition and the Business That Your Workshop Deserves
Ian Marsh, DVSA, Trade Engagement Manager – Technical Update from DVSA
Autotech Recruit and the college have been contacting garage owners within a 30-mile radius of Coventry to attend the event with a great deal of interest so far. It promises to be an insightful evening with excellent networking opportunities.
